Request for Student Contribution to Baserow | FIU Tech Talent Academy

Hello,

My name is Mario, and I am a student representative from the Tech Talent Academy at Florida International University (FIU). FIU is one of the largest public research universities in the United States, and the Tech Talent Academy is an initiative aimed at equipping students with real-world experience in software development through open-source contributions, hands-on projects, and professional mentorship.

We are always seeking meaningful collaboration opportunities with innovative platforms like Baserow, which not only help our students grow but also benefit from fresh perspectives and eager contributors.

One of our students recently expressed interest in contributing to a GitLab issue labeled “good first issue” on your repository. His name is Abner. It seemed like a great fit for a first-time contributor, and they are excited to get started. However, they have not received a response in the past six days. As part of our program timeline, it’s important that they receive timely feedback so they can proceed with their assignment and stay on track with the program milestones.

If possible, we would deeply appreciate if a developer from your team could review and assign the issue to our student or provide guidance on next steps. We’re confident this collaboration could be a productive and rewarding experience for both the student and your team.

Thank you for your time and consideration. We truly appreciate the work Baserow is doing for the open-source community.

Hi Mario,

Unfortunately we are a very small team and we have tried to accomodate for these situations previously but it resulted in no merge requests ever being made and inevitably cost the team a lot of time for no result.

That is not to say we do not want the contributions but we that we simply do not have the means to mentor or respond and oversee the process. We will of course still review any merge requests that are made so if the student wishes to work on the issue and create a merge request for it, they are more than welcome to do so.

Hello,

Thank you for your response and for the transparency regarding your team’s capacity - I completely understand the constraints of working with a small team.

To clarify, we’re not asking for mentorship or oversight beyond what’s already public in the issue. Our student, Abner, is prepared to work with his group to solve the issue, and we understand that any contributions will still need to meet your review standards before being considered for merging.

Our only request is to have the specific issue formally assigned to Abner, so that it’s clear to others that he is actively working on it. This helps us manage student assignments effectively within our program timeline and prevents overlapping efforts from other contributors.

We greatly appreciate your time and the opportunity to contribute to Baserow’s project. Please let us know if assigning the issue is possible.

Hi Mario, there is no need for an official assignment of the issue - this issue in particular is not currently assigned to anyone on the team and is not a high priority on the roadmap and has no milestone set. The likelihood of this being being worked on by someone else is near zero. We no longer externally assign contributors, only internal team members but we will happilly accept a MR from Abner if they wish to contribute to this issue.
