We Need Guides - Setting up Self Hosted Baserow with Docker and Portainer

Are you using our SaaS platform (Baserow.io) or self-hosting Baserow?

Self-hosted

What do you need help with?

Hello, I’m new. I have never self-hosted anything. Was using Airtable, but $0.
ChatGPT told me about Baserow and NocoDB.
I tried to find a Baserow setup guide. There are installation instructions, but they were too complex for me, and used terms I didn’t know.

Found Baserow Academy. Watched the video lesson titled “1. Self-hosted deployment” showing how to get Baserow through Docker. The video did not help. 9 hours of work/research passed. Average people would cut time loss, give up, and pay for Airtable. “What’s Docker?” and “What’s Portainer?!!” and “API error.” Bad ports. Etc. CONFUSION. FRUSTRATION.

I made Baserow work by following this youtube guide: https://youtu.be/FJlxe5-rZJo?feature=shared

A good goal for Baserow is: “A new user should be able to host locally in less than 1 hour.”

If I were you, I would spend $2,000 to hire a tech-tuber to make a video series. “How to Self-Host with Baserow using Docker and Portainer on Windows 11”. and Linux. Etc.

Please attach screenshots or videos if they help illustrate your question.

Hi @Norf thanks for the feedback.

Which part(s) of the Academy video did you get stuck on so we can look at improving that?

There is also extensive documentaiton surrounding installing Baserow: Configuring Baserow

Unfortunately it’s not very practical to provide docs for every possible circumstance as there are just so many. Having community driven content like the youtube video you linked is something that we rely on heavily - I’m glad you were able to find it and it worked for you.

Hi @cwinhall thank you for the responses!

The Academy video itself didn’t help since I am so new that I look at those lines of code and I don’t know how to run them. I installed Baserow via the Linux terminal. Claude AI just gave me the code. I fixed the Baserow version number, then ran it. Boom, done.

The YouTube video actually sent me down the wrong path. I haven’t been able to find a good YouTube video for Baserow’s install. If I hadn’t already been familiar with using Virtualbox and Virtual Machines, I never would have figured out Baserow. It’s all held together with duct tape right now. Docker wasn’t built for Windows users. Baserow doesn’t have a home in Windows.

Hello, there is a very good guide on how to install it via Pottien on a Synology. Maybe that will help you. How to Install Baserow on Your Synology NAS – Marius Hosting

Ah, very interesting. I have never used synology or other centralized, local servers like that. Right now, my use case is quite small, so I don’t need a big storage option like that, but I will remember it going forward. Maybe if my databases and use case get much larger in the future.

Thanks for sharing.
